Session 1- Wednesday April 13, 2022- 4:15- 5:30
The Need for Responsive Adaptations: Equity in Assessment of Emergent Bilinguals’ Reading
In this first session, participants will become familiar with the practice-based and theoretical issues that underlie the assessment of emergent bilinguals. Through an introduction to translanguaging and a critical translingual lens, teachers will be introduced to the concept of responsive adaptations, a framework for adapting the assessment process which aligns with students’ multilingual and multimodal expressions of their knowledge. The objective of this session is for teachers to build assessment knowledge of emergent bilinguals, so that they reclaim agency in this area and view the assessment process as a curricular space.
Session 2- Thursday May 5, 2022- 4:15-5:30
Adapting Assessment for Emergent Bilinguals to Local Contexts
In this session, a model for adapting assessment will be presented and participants will have an opportunity to explore this model for their local contexts. After reviewing principles that guide the multilingual, strengths-based assessment of emergent bilinguals, participants will have time to engage in collaborative work to adapt an assessment that they currently use with their students. The objective of this session is for teachers to acquire practical tools they can implement to carry out equitable assessment practices with their emergent bilingual students.
