Please join us for RITELL’s inaugural joint conference with RIFLA where we welcome internationally recognized speaker Dr. José Medina. Dr. Medina will lead us in conversations on how we can collaboratively work to promote, sustain, and celebrate students’ multilingualism.
Dr. Medina is an internationally recognized advocate for equity in dual language education and fierce champion of linguistically diverse communities. There will be multiple breakout sessions after the keynote for MLL teachers, administrators, general education teachers, and foreign language teachers- a little bit of something for everyone!
José Medina's Keynote Session: Linguistic Liberation for All
Linguistic oppression is a reality for all culturally and linguistically diverse student communities in the United States. As educators, often without realizing it, we may align with language ideologies that further perpetuate that oppression. Participants in this session will have an opportunity to reflect on current practices, while also interacting with biliteracy instructional practices that move us closer towards linguistic liberation for all.
Breakout Session with José Medina: Leveraging the Five Cross-Linguistic Tools for Linguistic Liberation
Session Description: Embracing translanguaging research, metalinguistic awareness, and cross-linguistic connections are a must when serving culturally and linguistically diverse student communities. Participants in this session will plan for bridge level 1, bridge level 2, bridge centers, bridge moments, and bridge tasks to empower students to leverage their full linguistic prowess.
